A five-run eighth inning from the St. Paul Saints was too much to overcome for the Sioux Falls Canaries, who dropped the last game of the teams' four-game series 8-4 at CHS Field.
Zach Walters capped off the eighth with a grand slam to right off of Kyle Schepel.
The Canaries led early in the game, pushing across a second-inning run on a bases-loaded walk from Jordan Smith.
St. Paul took the lead over the next two innings via three solo home runs. Burt Reynolds, Dante Bichette, Jr. and Justin O'Conner all went yard, giving the Saints a 3-1 advantage after four innings.
Canaries starter Dylan Thompson allowed three runs on 11 hits over six innings of work, walking one and striking out one.
The Birds got back in the game in the late innings. Dan Motl knocked an RBI single in the seventh to make it 3-2, and Maxx Garrett scored the tying run on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Jordan Dean led off the eighth for Sioux Falls, hitting a solo home run to make it 4-3 Birds.
Sioux Falls manager Mike Meyer put Kyle Schepel in to pitch in the eighth. Schepel struck out the first batter he faced, but allowed a double to Joey Wong one batter later.
Max Murphy followed Wong up with an RBI single, tying the game at 4.
Kyle Barrett singled to move Murphy to third, and stole second. After Burt Reynolds struck out for the second out of the inning, the Birds intentionally walked Brady Shoemaker to load the bases for Walters.
Walters homered to right, bringing the game to its final score. It was the most runs Schepel has allowed in one appearance this season.
The Birds hit the road for a Friday matchup with the RailCats at 7 p.m. The Canaries have not yet announced a starter for the game; lefty Alex Gunn will take the hill for Gary SouthShore. Birds fans can listen to the game on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 98.1 FM and AM 1230 KWSN and online on kwsn.com and the KWSN app.
