Canaries Come Up Just Short Against Goldeyes, 4-3
Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries rallied in the bottom of the ninth, but left the game-tying run on base against the Winnipeg Goldeyes, falling 4-3 Wednesday afternoon in front of a crowd of 2,973 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
RHP Troy Marks and RHP Mikey O’Brien combined to allow just three hits over the first three innings, twirling a pitchers’ duel at The Birdcage.
But the Goldeyes got to Marks in the top of the fourth, with three runs on three hits including a two-run homer off the bat of David Bergin to take a 3-0 lead.
The Birds loaded the bases against O’Brien in the bottom of the frame on an error and two walks, but O’Brien got Patrick Fiala to groundout to end the threat and keep Winnipeg’s lead at three.
Marks didn’t allow a run after the third, working around two base runners in the fifth and sixth innings and putting together a quality start. He allowed three runs on seven hits, walking two and striking out seven over 6.0 innings for the Canaries.
O’Brien allowed just one hit heading into the bottom of the seventh before Tyler Wolfe and Fiala hit back-to-back jacks to cut the Goldeyes’ lead to 3-2 and force the Goldeyes to make a call to the bullpen.
Aaron Gretz followed the homers with a double against LHP Kenny Matthews, but he was left stranded at second base, representing the game-tying run.
Andrew Woeck relieved Marks and worked a scoreless seventh, but a leadoff walk came back to haunt him in the eighth, as Winnipeg tacked on an insurance run, extending their lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the ninth, Wolfe led off with an infield single and scored on Fiala’s double, cutting the deficit to just one, but the Birds left Fiala, the game-tying run, on third to fall, 4-3, to the Goldeyes.
Marks takes the loss for the Birds, who fall to 34-41 on the season, while O’Brien earns the win, and Chaffee the save, for the Goldeyes, who move to 45-31 on the year.
The Canaries head up to St. Paul Thursday to start a seven-game road trip and open a four-game series at CHS Field against the Saints. RHP Miles Nordgren (3-6, 5.26 ERA) will take the mound for Sioux Falls in game one against St. Paul RHP Mark Hamburger (12-3, 3.26 ERA).
