Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries fell to the Sioux City Explorers, 8-2, on Friday night in front of 2,413 at Sioux Falls Stadium in the first game of the Birds’ final series of the 2017 American Association season.
Though the Canaries tallied five hits and seven baserunners over the first three innings against Explorers’ LHP Cody Forsythe, Forsythe stranded all seven runners and the Birds twice left the bases loaded in a scoreless ballgame, heading to the fourth.
And after Miles Nordgren cruised through his first three frames, he ran into some trouble over the next three, as Sioux City scored seven runs on 12 hits to take a 7-0 lead.
Eight batters came to the plate against Nordgren in a four-run third, with Levon Washington’s two-run blast, an RBI single off the bat of Eudor Garcia and Dre Gleason’s sacrifice fly doing the damage.
Sioux City tacked on two more in the fifth on Tyler Ogle and Kelly’s RBI singles, and one more in the sixth on Washington’s RBI single, his third RBI of the day.
Nordgren finished his outing allowing seven runs on 14 hits over 6.0 innings pitched against Sioux City.
The Birds finally got on the board on Aaron Gretz’ two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Patrick Fiala and Dan Motl, but the Explorers answered right back with a run off Andrew Woeck in the top of the seventh to extend their lead to 8-2.
Nicco Blank worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings but the Canaries couldn’t get much going against Ryan Flores, on the hill for the Explorers, and fell, 8-2, in game one of the four-game set.
Nordgren takes the loss for the Canaries, who fall to 43-54 on the season, while Forsythe picks up the win for the Explorers, who move to 45-52 on the year with the win.
The Sioux Falls Canaries continue their final series of the 2017 American Association season against the Sioux City Explorers on Saturday night at 6:05 PM. LHP Joe Bircher (4-6, 4.56 ERA) will take the hill for the Canaries against Sioux City’s LHP Kramer Sneed (6-4, 5.42 ERA)
