Canaries Finalize Trade With St. Paul Saints
SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Wednesday afternoon that the organization has acquired outfielder Willie Argo and catcher Aaron Gretz from the St. Paul Saints to complete their August 23rd trade that sent 1B/DH David Bergin to St. Paul.
The 26-year-old Argo was one of the top offensive threats for the Saints over the last two seasons. Argo posted a .290 batting average to go along with 20 home runs, 32 doubles and 90 RBI in 155 regular season games. The speedy outfielder finished the 2016 season 4th on the team in batting average while finishing 3rd in doubles and stolen bases (14).
The Davenport, IA native was drafted in the 22nd round of the 2012 MLB draft by the Tampa Bay Rays. Argo hit .259 in three minor league seasons, including one season at the AA level in 2014 with the Montgomery Biscuits of the Southern League. His best season came in 2013 when he hit .308 in 95 games with the Charlotte Stone Crabs of the Florida State League. Argo collected 18 doubles and 37 stolen bases (both career highs) while finishing the season with 30 RBI and 58 runs scored.
The 23-year-old Gretz had a breakout season in 2016, posting a .277 batting average to go along with 11 extra-base hits and 25 RBI. The rookie catcher also had a terrific defensive season, throwing out 20% of all base runners. The Apple Valley, MN native played four collegiate seasons at Ohio State University, where he posted a .267 batting average to go along with 27 doubles and 62 RBI.
“Trading away a top talent like David Bergin was not an easy decision for us,” said Canaries General Manager Duell Higbe. “We needed to get some real talent in return for a play of his caliber. We think Willie and Aaron will help fill some holes in our offense and provide solid defense for our squad in 2017.”
The Sioux Falls Canaries are currently accepting applications for the Field Managers position, and hope to have the vacancy filled in the near future.
