It's third time lucky for the Sioux Falls Canaries. Birds catcher Dashenko Ricardo has had his contract purchased by the Tampa Bay Rays organization.

Ricardo is the third Canary to be signed by a major-league club this offseason. Outfielder Jordan Smith signed with the Cleveland Indians in January, and relief pitcher Ryan Fritze signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks on March 11.

The Canaries acquired Ricardo in a trade with the Lincoln Saltdogs earlier this offseason. Ricardo suited up for Lincoln in 2017 and 2018.

"In my opinion, he's the best defensive catcher in our league," Meyer said of Ricardo, adding his ability to manage a pitching staff was another reason the Canaries were drawn to him.

The 29-year-old native of Curacao already has seven years of minor league experience under his belt. He's also served as the starting catcher on the Dutch national team, playing in two World Baseball Classics.

The Sioux Falls Canaries open their 2019 season May 16 on the road. Their home opener is scheduled for May 31, a Fireworks Night game against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:05pm.
