Canaries Swept by Goldeyes, 8-3
Winnipeg, Manitoba – The Sioux Falls Canaries fell to the Winnipeg Goldeyes, 8-3, completing the sweep by their North Division-rival at Shaw Park on Sunday afternoon.
Against Miles Nordgren, the Goldeyes took an early lead on three hits in the bottom of the first inning, but Nordgren got David Bergin to ground into a 1-2-3 double play to end the threat and get out of a bases loaded jam only allowing one run.
Once again in the bottom of the second, the Goldeyes added a run on two hits, but Nordgren again left a runner in scoring position to keep Winnipeg’s lead at just 2-0.
The Birds struck back for a run in the top of the third to cut the Goldeyes’ lead in half on Burt Reynolds’ RBI single. A one-out walk from Dan Motl and Brett Marr’s single put runners on first and second for Reynolds, who brought Motl home with a ground ball up the middle.
The Goldeyes came right back to answer with another run in the bottom of the third, as Reggie Abercrombie doubled, stole third and scored on David Begin’s RBI single.
And in the bottom of the fourth, the Goldeyes scored for their fourth-straight inning against Nordgren, tacking on four runs on five hits to extend their lead to 7-1.
Nordgren allowed seven runs on 13 hits over just 4.0 innings of work, striking out and walking one, continuing the Birds’ struggles against the Goldeyes.
In the top of the fifth, Mike Falsetti led off with a solo home run against Kevin McGovern to cut the lead to 7-2, before Neal Kunik kept the Goldeyes off the scoreboard for the first time with a scoreless bottom of the fifth.
The Birds added another run off McGovern, working on three-days rest due to an injury to LHP Kevin Dodson, in the top of the sixth on Blake Schmit’a RBI groundout to cut the lead to 7-3, but the Goldeyes got the run right back in the bottom frame to extend the lead to 8-3.
Both teams went scoreless in the seventh and eighth innings before Ryan Chaffee closed things down for the Goldeyes to wrap up the 8-3 victory and a series sweep of Sioux Falls.
Nordgren takes the loss for the Canaries, who fall to 41-51 on the season, while McGovern picks up the win for the Goldeyes, who move to 57-36 on the season.
