Canaries Walk-Off To Beat AirHogs, 6-5
Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries walked-off on Chris Jacob’s two-run single to defeat the Texas AirHogs, 6-5 in front of 2,145 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
Through four innings of work, Grady Wood faced just three more than the minimum against the AirHogs and striking out seven.
But the AirHogs figured out Wood in the fifth, loading the bases on a single, walk and hit-by-pitch before bringing five runs home on two singles and a double.
On the other side of the hill, former Canary Billy Waltrip walked five batters over the first four innings, but Waltrip also struck out five and stranded five Birds’ base runners.
The Canaries finally did get on the board against Waltrip in the fifth on Ty Morrison’s two-run homer, cutting the AirHogs’ lead to 5-2.
Wood bounced back with a scoreless sixth, leaving the bases loaded before the Canaries again cut into the AirHogs lead and knocked Waltrip out of the game in the bottom of the frame.
Burt Reynolds led off the inning with a double and one batter later Tyler Wolfe brought Reynolds home with a double of his own. Mike Falsetti’s groundout moved Wolfe over to third before Blake Schmit's RBI single cut Texas’ lead to 5-4.
Wood allowed five runs on nine hits, walking two and striking out eight over six innings pitched.
Nicco Blank, James Jones and Jose Ortega combined for three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to send the Canaries to the ninth, trailing 5-4.
And in the ninth, Luis De La Cruz, facing the top of the Birds’ order, allowed back-to-back singles to Dan Motl and Jabari Henry before Ty Morrison’s walk loaded the bases for Jacobs. Jacob’s blooped the second pitch of the at-bat into shallow right-centerfield, scoring Motl and Henry and giving the Birds the walk-off victory.
Ortega picks up the win for the Canaries, who move to 32-37 on the season, while the AirHogs take the loss, falling to 26-43, with De La Cruz taking the loss.
