Paterson Announces 2016 Coaching Staff
SIOUX FALLS, SD- Sioux Falls Canaries Field Manager Chris Paterson announced his 2016 coaching staff on Wednesday afternoon. Former major leaguer, Ozzie Canseco will return as Hitting Coach joined by first year Pitching Coach, Demetrius Banks.
Canseco is the identical twin brother of Jose Canseco, the former MLB All-Star and second half of the Oakland Athletic’s famed “Bash Brothers”. Ozzie, 50, also appeared in 24 major league games with the St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland Athletics between 1990 and 1993.
Ozzie appeared in over 1,000 minor league games, including several recent plate appearances for the Laredo Lemurs, Yuma Scorpions, Edinburg Roadrunners, and Brownsville Charros. In 19 minor league seasons, Canseco collected 181 career home runs, and 647 RBI.
Ozzie currently holds the Atlantic League single season home run record with 48, which he achieved while playing for the Newark Bears in 2000. The Power hitter also appeared in 61 Northern League games for the Duluth-Superior Dukes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in 1998, posting a .307 batting average to go along with his 15 home runs.
Canseco previously served as Field Manager of the United League’s Edinburg Roadrunners and Brownsville Charros during the 2013 and 2014 seasons prior to joining the Canaries coaching staff midway through the 2015 season.
"It's good to have a friend like Ozzie as my Assistant Coach," Said Field Manager Chris Paterson. "I know he has the experience and knowledge to help this team get better. The team batting average went up tremendously when he joined our staff last season. We think we can build on that in 2016."
Demetrius Banks joins the Canaries coaching staff in 2016 after spending the previous 14 seasons in the minor leagues and independent ranks.
Banks, 32, was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 13th round of the 2002 MLB Draft. He made 93 relief appearances over 5 minor league seasons, racking up 155 strikeouts in 129 innings. Banks became a starting pitcher at the independent level, making 97 starts from 2007-2015 in the Can-Am League, Frontier League, and United League. During that stretch Banks recorded a 44-34 record and 4.52 ERA.
"Banks has been around baseball for a long time," added Paterson. "I've had the opportunity to watch and see him develope over the last few years. We think we found a guy who can relate to our young players, and help us get to where we want to be as an organization."
