The Sioux Falls Canaries have signed former Triple-A outfielder Brett Vertigan for the 2019 season, the club announced Sunday.

Vertigan, a former Oakland Athletics farmhand, is expected to contend for the team's everyday centerfielder job this season.

Vertigan was originally selected in the 10th round of the 2012 MLB draft, the same round as new Canary teammate Grady Wood and former Canary Joe Bircher.

After a strong start in the A's system, Vertigan earned a promotion to the Double-A MidlandRockHounds in 2016. Vertigan would spend the next two-and-a-half years with the Texas League squad, hitting .255/.336/.327 over 255 games.

Last season, Vertigan earned a promotion to Triple-A Nashville, and his numbers improved across the board. The lefty hit .274/.344/.405 in 33 games.

Vertigan's skill in the outfield also caught the Canaries eye. The California native owns a .989 lifetime fielding percentage over 7 seasons in the minor leagues.

The Sioux Falls Canaries open their 2019 season on May 16 on the road. Their home opener is scheduled for May 31, a Fireworks Night game against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:05pm.
