Utility player Mitch Glasser and reliever Will LaMarche are returning to Sioux Falls for the 2019 season, the club announced Sunday.

In addition to playing, Glasser will serve as the Canaries' hitting coach for 2019.

BACK AT THE BIRDCAGE

Aquired by the Canaries in late June of last season, Glasser made an immediate impact for the Canaries both on the field and in the clubhouse.

Glasser posted a .289 batting average (second-best on the team) in 67 games with the Canaries last year, as well as a .365 on-base percentage.

A versatile defender, Glasser made appearances at second base, third base and right field last season. He's expected to take on a "super utility" role in addition to his coaching duties in 2019.

"At the end of the day, the goal is to make every hitter the best version of themselves -- I think that's what we can do here at the Birdcage," Glasser said. "I think we brought in the right guys in the offseason; everybody's really excited."

A former Chicago White Sox draft pick, Glasser has played in the independent ranks since 2015, when he suited up for the Frontier League’s Joplin Blasters. Glasser hit .314/.411/.417 his second year with the Blasters in 2016, turning that success into a spot with Cleburne in the American Association in 2017. He played 24 games for the RailCats this season, posting a solid .380 on base percentage.

LAMARCHE RETURNS

LaMarche rejoins the Canaries after an eventful 2018. The hard-throwing right-hander played for four different clubs last year. He started the year with Double-A Richmond in the San Francisco Giants' system, before earning a promotion to Triple-A Sacramento later in the year.

LaMarche would be released by the Giants in late June, and signed with the Sioux City Explorers on July 7. He'd sign with Sioux Falls about a month later.

The Pleasanton, California native recorded a 6.35 ERA in 11 appearances with Sioux Falls last year, recording 17 strikeouts and seven walks in 11.1 innings of work.

He'd end the season on a hot streak: over LaMarche's last four appearances he allowed no runs and only two combined hits.

The Sioux Falls Canaries open their 2018 season on May 16 on the road. Their home opener is scheduled for May 31, a Fireworks Night game against the Winnipeg Goldeyes at 7:05pm.
