Winnipeg Uses a Pair of Big Innings to Down Sioux Falls
Winnipeg, MB – The Sioux Falls Canaries committed four errors and left 15 runners on base Saturday as the Birds were dealt an 11-6 loss by Winnipeg.
Sioux Falls opened the scoring in the top of the first inning when Wyatt Ulrich crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Barth. But Winnipeg escaped the frame with no further damage done and made a pair of run-saving plays over the next two innings.
The Goldeyes struck for four runs in their half of the third and added five more in the fourth. Sioux Falls loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the fifth before Jabari Henry drew an RBI walk but Winnipeg once again escaped a jam with minimal damage.
Darnell Sweeney crushed a two-run homerun with two outs in the sixth inning to bring the Birds within 9-4 and Henry scored on a wild pitch in the seventh but the Goldeyes answered with a solo homerun in the bottom half.
Ulrich stole second base in the eighth inning and scored via two Winnipeg errors but the Goldeyes got the run back in their half of the frame with an RBI double.
Sweeney led the offense with three hits while Tyler Ryan finished with two. The Canaries (6-9) will look to clinch the three-game series which concludes Sunday at 1pm.
