Sioux Falls Canaries
A Rich History of Professional Baseball
The legacy of professional baseball in Sioux Falls dates back to 1902, but the current Sioux Falls Canaries team, as it is known today, began playing in 1993 with the establishment of the Northern League. Since their inception, the Canaries have made their home at the Birdcage, located at 1001 Northwest Ave, Sioux Falls, SD 57104.
In 2006, the Sioux Falls Canaries transitioned into the American Association of Professional Baseball, where they gained recognition for their talent and dedication. The team reached a historic milestone in 2008 when they secured their first championship title.
In 2021, the Canaries entered a new chapter with new ownership. On March 12, 2021, local small business leader Brian Slipka, alongside Duke Cannon Supply Co. founders Anthony Albanese and Sam Swartz, acquired the team through True North Sports LLC. Under their leadership, the Canaries continue to thrive, bringing fresh energy and excitement to the Sioux Falls baseball scene.
One of their key initiatives, the “Canaries Community Fund,” was launched on May 6, 2021, by the team owners through the Slipka Foundation. This initiative aims to support charitable organizations and causes throughout South Dakota, strengthening the community bond that the Canaries have cultivated over the years.
For over three decades, the Sioux Falls Canaries have been a staple of entertainment for families and baseball fans alike. Since the 2021 ownership change, the team has embraced the motto “A Whole New Ballgame,” signaling a bright future and an enhanced fan experience for all who come to enjoy America's favorite pastime in Sioux Falls.
