LATE BIRDS RALLY COMES UP SHORT

Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries nearly erased a five-run deficit Sunday afternoon, getting the winning run to second base in the ninth before ultimately falling to Fargo-Moorhead 9-8 at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The RedHawks struck first with a solo homerun in the first inning but Zane Gurwitz tied the game with an RBI single in the home half. A pair of Fargo errors led to a Sioux Falls run in the second inning but the ‘Hawks responded with an RBI single in the third.

Fargo took a 5-2 lead on a three-run homerun in the top of the fifth before the Canaries scored on an error later in the inning. The two teams each plated a run in the sixth; Fargo’s came on a bases loaded walk and Angelo Altavilla smacked an RBI single for Sioux Falls.

The RedHawks’ largest lead came in the top of the seventh inning when a three-run homerun put the guests in front 9-4 but Kona Quiggle cleared the bases with a three-run double in the bottom of the frame.

Altavilla scored in the eighth inning on a sacrifice flyout from Gavin LaValley to bring the Birds within a run. Riley Ferrell tossed a scoreless top of the ninth and a pair of hits by Quiggle and Altavilla put them both in scoring position with two outs in the home half before a groundout ended the game.

Gurwitz and Jabari Henry each finished with three hits while Quiggle added two hits and drove in three. The Canaries are now 21-31 overall and are off until Thursday for the American Association All-Star Break.
