BIRDS RALLY TO FORCE EXTRAS BEFORE FALLING TO KANSAS CITY

Sioux Falls, SD – Down to the team’s final strike twice in the ninth inning, John Nester drew a walk and Angelo Altavilla delivered an RBI single to tie Saturday night’s game. But Kansas City manufactured two runs in the top of the tenth that proved be the difference as they topped Sioux Falls 3-1 in ten innings.

The Monarchs opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and the 1-0 lead held until Altavilla’s two-out RBI single in the ninth. The Canaries managed to get the winning run into scoring position but a strikeout in the next at bat sent the game to extra innings.

Kansas City scored two runs in the top of the tenth; one via balk and the other on a wild pitch. The Birds put runners at the corners with no outs in the home half but couldn’t cut into the deficit. The lead runner was thrown out at home plate on a fielder’s choice before a strikeout and a second fielder’s choice ended the game.
