BIRDS STAY HOT, SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER WITH SIOUX CITY

 

Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries pushed their winning streak to four consecutive games on Wednesday, sweeping a doubleheader from archrival Sioux City. The Canaries started with day with a 5-2 triumph before earning a 4-3 walkoff victory in the nightcap.

 

The Explorers built a 2-0 lead in game one before Sioux Falls recorded a hit. Gavin LaValley got the home team on the board with a sacrifice groundout in the fourth inning and tied the game with a two-out single in the sixth. Aaron Takacs then delivered a three-run homerun to put the Birds ahead for good as Riley Ferrell tossed a scoreless seventh inning to collect his eighth save.

 

The Explorers opened the scoring in game two with an RBI double in the first inning but Shamoy Christopher gave Sioux Falls their first lead with a two-run homerun in the second. Jabari Henry drilled a solo homerun an inning later but the Explorers answered with a pair of solo shots to force extra innings. The tie held until the eighth when Henry singled home Wyatt Ulrich to give the Birds their third walkoff victory of the season.

 

Tyler Garkow earned the win in game one, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. He also struck out three and did not issue a walk. Charlie Hasty was the winning pitcher in game two, tossing a scoreless inning of relief. Sioux Falls is now 19-29 and will attempt to sweep the Explorers Thursday night at 7:05pm.
