CANARIES COMEBACK EFFORT FALLS JUST SHORT

Sioux Falls, SD – The Sioux Falls Canaries belted four homeruns Sunday afternoon, nearly erasing a five-run deficit but Kane County hung on to win 9-8 at Sioux Falls Stadium.

The Cougars struck for three runs in the second inning and added another in the fourth on a Josh Rolette homerun. But the Birds responded with a pair of solo shots in the home half from Gavin LaValley and Kona Quiggle.

Kane County scored on an RBI fielder’s choice in the fifth inning and Jimmy Kerrigan crushed a two-out, two-run homerun in the sixth to give the Cougars their largest lead. But Quiggle homered again in the bottom half, this time with two men on base, to bring Sioux Falls within 7-5 after six innings.

The Cougars produced a pair of run-scoring singles in the top of the seventh before LaValley brought home Zane Gurwitz with an RBI double. Kane County took a 9-6 lead to the ninth inning where Jabari Henry homered with two outs and a man on base to bring the Birds within a run. However, a strikeout in the next at-bat ended the threat and helped the Cougars claim the best-of-three series.

Quiggle was 3-4 with four RBI while LaValley finished 3-5 and drove in two. The Canaries are now 24-36 and will head to Kansas City for a three-game series beginning Tuesday.
