Canaries Sign Rookie Infielder Maiben and Returning Right-Handed Pitcher Miller

Sioux Falls, SD – The Canaries are pleased to announce the signing of Rookie Infielder, Derek Maiben and returning Right-Handed Pitcher, Seth Miller.

Maiben, 23, played collegiately at Western Oregon University. The Newberg, Oregon native was excellent at the plate, with a career slash line of .367/.433/.457/.890, while only striking out 30 times in 732 plate appearances. Following his college season, Maiben joined on with the Boise Hawks of the Pioneer League. In 57 games, he hit .316, with 11 double and 31 runs batted in.

As impressive as those numbers are, Manager Mike Meyer is most exciting to see his “wizardry” in the field.

“From everything I have seen in video and been told by his coach, Grady Wood (Canaries Pitcher 2017-2021), his glove grades out as his best tool. As we have seen for years, playing sound defense and keeping our opponents to 3-outs per inning is critical in the Birdcage,” says Meyer. “Adding Derek to our roster will only solidify what looks to be a great defensive infield.”

Miller, 24, re-joins the Canaries after a very solid first season. The hometown Augustana Viking product played a big role for the Birds in 2023, even after logging over 100 innings during his spring season. Miller earned the Pointstreak Pitcher of the Week honors following his 3-hit shutout victory over the Sioux City Explorers on August 18th.

“Seth is going to play a big role for us this upcoming season,” says Meyer. “I was so impressed with his bulldog mentality last summer, and cannot wait to see him fresh for us in 2024.”
