SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries won the season finale vs. the Sioux City Explorers 3-2. Tyler Garkow fired six strong innings to get the win, and Caleb Frare notched the save with a scoreless ninth.
The Birds scored single runs in the second, third, and fourth to open an early advantage. Trey Michalczewski got the fun started with his 13th homer of the summer, a solo blast vs. RHP Zach Hedges to make it 1-0. Cade Gotta and Mike Hart each notched RBI.
Hedges (8-5) suffered the loss while Garkow earned the win. The righty finishes 6-9 on the season after carving 6.0 innings. He allowed two runs (two earned) while holding Sioux City to just three hits. He struck out four. Trevor Simms, DJ Sharabi, and Caleb Frare put together three straight scoreless innings to finish the game. The save was the 12th of the season for Frare.
The Canaries finish the season 36-64. The X’s dropped to 53-46 with the loss. In a stunning twist, the team will still qualify for the playoffs by virtue of a Houston win in Lincoln. 3,182 fans came through the turnstiles for the season finale.
