EXPLORERS DENY BIRDS A THIRD CONSECUTIVE WIN
Sioux City, IA – The Sioux Falls Canaries left seven runners in scoring position on Wednesday as the Birds dropped a 12-4 decision to Sioux City.
The Explorers built an early 3-0 lead with an RBI double and a pair of unearned runs. Sioux Falls answered with an RBI single from Gavin LaValley in the top of the third, followed by a John Nester solo homerun an inning later.
But Nate Samson led off bottom of the fourth with a round-tripper of his own, beginning a string of nine consecutive Sioux City runs. The X’s loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth inning and plated three runs before scoring five times with two outs in the seventh.
Trey Michalczewski delivered a two-run double to left-center field in the ninth inning but the Birds couldn’t close the gap any further.
Ozzie Martinez finished with three hits in his return to the lineup after missing a week due to injury. Sioux Falls is now 14-28 and will look ahead to the series rubber match on Thursday.
