SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries are happy to announce that longtime star Jabari Henry will return for the 2022 season.

“Jabari has been a fixture in our lineup since 2017, and is coming off of arguably the most productive season of his incredible career. He’s one of the most well-rounded bats in the entire league, and is as feared at the dish as any player in the American Association,” said Canaries Vice President of Baseball and Stadium Operations Duell Higbe. “He’s invaluable to our lineup, as well as the clubhouse, and I can’t wait to see what he brings to the Birdcage in 2022.”

An American Association legend, Henry enjoyed one of the best seasons of his professional career in 2021. The designated hitter appeared in 91 games, hitting .292 with 21 home runs and 77 RBI while also serving as the team’s hitting coach, a role he will assume once again in 2022. He finished second in the Association in walks (85) and OBP (.451).

Henry also became the Canaries modern home run and RBI career record-holder in 2021. He hit 21 home runs, giving him 74 total between regular season and postseason since joining the Canaries in 2017. He made history once again at The Birdcage September 3 vs. the Sioux City Explorers with a two-run home run that gave him sole possession of the all-time modern Canaries RBI record (232) and tied the game at 3-3.

This will be his fifth year with the Birds and skipper Mike Meyer.

“It’s always a comforting feeling knowing Jabari will be wearing a Canaries jersey for another season. Jabari has been one of the most productive middle of the order bats in the American Association for a long time, and we look forward to him continuing that production the season,” said Meyer. “In addition to having Jabari hitting in our lineup, Jabari will return as our hitting coach for the 2022 season. Jabari is one of the most cerebral hitters I’ve ever been around. I look to him to pass on his vast knowledge of hitting to the rest of our lineup.”

Canaries fans remember Henry’s historic 2017 season with the Birds, when the slugger hit .302/.401/.617 over 84 games. His 29 home runs that year are tied for the most in a single season in club history.

Henry returned to the Birds in 2018. Though he was hampered somewhat by injury, he still produced a .247/.326/.430 slash line with 17 doubles and 13 home runs.

After leaving Sioux Falls in a trade, Henry split his 2019 season between the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League and the American Association’s St. Paul Saints.

In 2020, he returned to Sioux Falls and anchored a Birds team that charged all the way to the American Association Finals. His campaign culminated with an outstanding performance in the championship series, where he hit .412 with six RBI, three doubles and two home runs in five games.

The Sioux Falls Canaries will open their 2022 home schedule May 20th vs. the Milwaukee Milkmen at The Birdcage. The team’s full 100-game schedule is now available.
