Rehwaldt Homers Twice, Birds Down Kansas City in Extras
Lawrence, KS – Josh Rehwaldt mashed two homeruns and drove in four as the Canaries topped Kansas City 11-7 in ten innings on Tuesday.
The Birds grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a Jordan Barth sacrifice groundout before the Monarchs answered with three runs in the home half. Rehwaldt drilled a solo homerun in the top of the fourth before Tate Meiners tied the game with a sacrifice fly.
Rehwaldt later blasted a three-run roundtripper in the fifth inning and Spencer Sarringar added an RBI single to give Sioux Falls a 7-3 lead. But Kansas City scored twice in the bottom half and tied the game with two more runs in the seventh.
The 7-7 score held throughout regulation until the Canaries exploded for four runs in the top of the tenth. Hunter Clanin ripped an RBI double before scoring on a double from Barth. Liam Spence followed with a two-run single and that was more than enough support for Charlie Hasty who retired all three batters he faced in the home half.
Spence finished with three hits while Rehwaldt, Clanin, Sarringar, Trevor Achenbach and Wyatt Ulrich each finished with two. Dylan Chalmers tossed four innings of relief to earn his first professional victory. The Birds are now 18-10, tied for the top record in the league and will close their six-game roadtrip Wednesday at 4:00pm.
