GENEVA, Ill. – The Sioux Falls Canaries dropped the rubber match in Kane County 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Medicine Field. The Birds head to Gary for a four-game set starting Monday at 7:10 pm.
Trey Michalczewski led the Canaries with two hits. He doubled to lead off the seventh with the Canaries down 2-0 but was stranded on second base. Cade Gotta had the only other hit in the game, a sixth inning single to break up a no-hit bid by Kane County starter Josh Tols. Gotta also caught a runner trying to score from second at the plate in the fourth from center field.
Ty Culbreth (6-6) turned in a solid start on the mound for the Birds. He limited Kane County to just two runs (two earned), both scored in the sixth, while striking out four and walking four. He suffered the loss. Tols (3-5) held the Canaries to just two hits in 7.2 innings. He struck out a season-high 12 on the way to the win.
Right fielder Wyatt Ulrich was held in check by Tols. He finished the game 0-for-4 and did not reach, snapping a 51-game on-base streak. He had reached in every contest since June 5. The Cougars (32-36) were led by Josh Allen, who doubled to drive in two and put the game out of reach in the eighth.
The Canaries (25-42) will head to Gary to take on the RailCats (27-40) for a four-game set. Starters for Game 1 are TBA.
