SIOUX FALLS – The Sioux Falls Canaries are greatly saddened to learn of the passing of former pitcher and coach Tyler Herron. A tremendous competitor, teammate and mentor, he will be missed dearly by the Sioux Falls community and all those who knew him across his long career.
“The Canaries organization is incredibly saddened to learn of Tyler’s passing,” said Canaries general manager Duell Higbe. “I had the pleasure of watching Tyler compete at a high level against the Canaries for many years. We were finally able to see him in a Birds uniform in 2019 and 2020, leading us to the American Association Championship series in 2020 as the club’s ace.”
The Wellington, Florida native joined the Canaries in 2019. He went 50 innings for the team that season, posting a 3.78 ERA and 37 strikeouts. While also serving as the team’s bench coach in 2020, Herron recorded a 7-1 record, a 4.60 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 76.1 innings as the Canaries earned a place in the American Association Finals.
“I am very saddened to hear of the passing of Tyler Herron,” said Canaries manager Mike Meyer. “I feel very honored to have worked with Tyler for a few years. He was a tremendous competitor and student of the game, and I always looked forward to his start day. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Herron family.”
A first-round MLB Draft selection by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2005, Herron enjoyed a long and productive professional baseball career that featured eight seasons in affiliated Minor League Baseball with the Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals and New York Mets organizations. He also pitched for Team Israel at the 2017 World Baseball Classic, an experience he described as “the best experience I’ve ever had in baseball for sure.”
Herron first debuted in the American Association with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in 2012. The lefty pitched with the RedHawks again in 2015 and split time between the Lincoln Saltdogs and Winnipeg Goldeyes in 2018.
He rejoined Fargo in 2021 after playing with Atenienses de Manati in the Puerto Rican Winter League. Herron played 16 total seasons of professional baseball, racking up 103 wins and 38 saves in his impressive career. He was 35 years old.
