BIRDS WALKOFF CLEBURNE IN BACK-TO-BACK GAMES
Sioux Falls, SD – Chase Gearing fanned a season-high eight opposing batters and Joe Vos delivered a walkoff single with two outs in the ninth inning to help the Sioux Falls Canaries defeat Cleburne 6-5 on Thursday.
The Birds homered twice in the first inning; a solo shot from Josh Rehwaldt and a two-run blast by Anthony Hall to build an early 3-0 lead. Cam Hassert led off the top of the second with a double and later scored on a Vos sacrifice fly.
Both teams scored in their half of the fifth inning. The Railroaders got on the board with an RBI single while the Canaries got the run back on a groundball double play.
Cleburne fought back with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, an RBI single in the eighth and a solo homerun in the ninth to tie the game. Grady Mee led off the bottom of the ninth with a single and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt. A lineout to centerfield put two outs on the scoreboard but Vos followed with a hard-hit single to center to walkoff the Railroaders for the second consecutive night.
Hall finished with two hits to lead the offense while Gearing allowed a run on three hits over six innings. The Canaries (48-48) host Lincoln for a four-game series to close the regular season beginning Friday at 7:05pm.
