BIG FIFTH INNING FUELS BIRDS VICTORY

Winnipeg, MB – The Sioux Falls Canaries used a five-run fifth inning to top Winnipeg 9-8 in a rain-shortened contest Tuesday night.

The Goldeyes opened the scoring with a first inning sacrifice fly but Trevor Achenbach blasted a two-run homerun in the top of the second to put the Birds in front.

Mike Hart smacked an RBI single in the third inning to make it 3-1 but Winnipeg tied the game with a two-run shot in the home half.

A throwing error in the bottom of the fourth led to a Winnipeg run before the Canaries responded by scoring five times in the top of the fifth. Hart put Sioux Falls back in the lead with a two-run single before Michael Curialle drilled a three-run homerun.

Joe Vos doubled to start the sixth inning and scored on a base hit from Anthony Sharkas. The Goldeyes scored four times in the bottom half and put the go-ahead run on base before a double play ended the inning. Play never resumed due to inclement weather.

Hart and Sharkas each finished with two hits while Chase Gearing tossed 5 1/3 innings and struck out four to earn the win. The Canaries (11-7) return to action Wednesday at 11:00am.
