CANARIES COMEBACK FALLS SHORT IN FARGO
Fargo, ND – Fargo-Moorhead built a nine-run lead and held off the Canaries down the stretch for a 13-8 victory at Newman Outdoor Field on Thursday.
The RedHawks struck for five runs in the third inning to build a 5-0 lead. Sioux Falls got two back in the top of the fourth via RBI singles from Grady Mee and Scott Combs but the RedHawks answered with four runs in the home half and added two more in the fifth.
The Birds got back in the game with a five-run sixth inning. Combs smacked an RBI double and Joe Vos followed with an RBI single before Mike Hart drilled a three-run homer to get the Canaries within 11-7.
The Birds loaded the bases with one out in the top of the seventh but did not score. Hart walked to lead off the top of the eighth and crossed home plate on a Josh Rehwaldt double. However, Fargo-Moorhead scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half to pull away.
Mee finished with a team-high three hits while Hart drove in three to pace the offense. The Canaries (44-46) are now a half-game above Sioux City for the final playoff spot in the West Division and open a three-game series at Gary SouthShore Friday night at 6:45pm.
