Lincoln, NE – Joe Vos tallied three hits and Chase Gearing struck out five in his Sioux Falls debut as the Canaries defeated Lincoln 2-1 in an eight-inning, rain-shortened contest.
Vos singled to begin the fifth inning and reached second base on an error. Chris Kwitzer smacked an RBI single with one out to give the Birds a 1-0 lead.
Vos came to the plate with the bases loaded an inning later and ripped an RBI base hit but the Saltdogs responded with a run-scoring single of their own in the bottom half.
Inclement weather would halt action in the eighth inning and play would not resume.
Gearing tossed 5 1/3 innings, allowing a run on four hits while fanning five while Dyson Johnson earned a save in his Canaries debut.
The Birds (2-0) will look to sweep the series Sunday at 1:05pm
