MONARCHS USE BIG THIRD INNING TO SWEEP CANARIES
Sioux Falls, SD – Sioux Falls and Kansas City hit a combined seven homeruns on Sunday but a six-run third inning propelled the Monarchs to an 8-6 victory.
Josh Rehwaldt homered in the bottom of the first inning to give the Birds an early 1-0 lead but Kansas City tied the game in the top of the second with an RBI single. Ten Monarchs batted in the third inning as they took the lead for good with six runs.
Michael Curialle smashed a two-run shot in the fourth inning to get Sioux Falls within 7-3. Kansas City responded with a solo homer in the top of the fifth before Trevor Achenbach doubled to start the home half and scored on a Joe Vos sacrifice.
Josh Rehwaldt drew a leadoff walk an inning later and Grady Mee smashed a two-run blast to bring the Birds within two but that’s as close as the hosts would get down the stretch.
Rehwaldt finished with three hits to highlight the Sioux Falls offense as the Canaries dip to 43-44. The Birds open a six-game roadtrip Tuesday night in Fargo.
